WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19: CARTOONISTS

Profile America -- Wednesday, August 19th. One simple pleasure more than a century old continues to this day in a morning ritual performed by millions -- reading the comic section of the daily newspaper. These cartoons go back to the late 19th century, and became a major popular cultural force, spawning comic books, radio shows, movies and Broadway musicals. Two prominent cartoonists of the past have birthdays this month -- George Herriman, creator of the enormously popular "Krazy Kat," and Walt Kelly, who created Pogo, a strip of social and political satire. Today, there are more than 1,400 daily newspapers published across the country, with a combined circulation of nearly 51 million readers. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.
