BRISTOL, R.I., Aug. 20 /-/ -- Roger Williams University (RWU) is ranked 7th among the 64 colleges and universities in its category in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 rankings of best colleges, its highest ranking ever. Roger Williams University was ranked in the Best Baccalaureate Colleges - North, which includes institutions that focus on undergraduate education and offer a wide range of degree programs in the liberal arts and in professional fields such as business, nursing and education.
The publication groups colleges and universities that are similar in mission, size and course offerings, and then ranks them into tiers according to a variety of evaluation criteria including academic reputation, freshman retention rate, student/faculty ratio and average graduation rate. The exclusive rankings are available today at www.usnews.com/colleges and will be published in the September issue of the U.S. News & World Report Magazine.
"It's gratifying to see Roger Williams University recognized in U.S. News for academic quality," said Roy J. Nirschel, Ph.D., President of RWU. "The University showed considerable progress in assessment from our peers in higher education as well as improvements in selectivity and student-faculty ratio. RWU continues to provide students with a unique educational experience, characterized by small classes, close faculty-student relationships, and a high degree of individual attention for every student."
RWU's ranking as number seven in the list of best baccalaureate colleges in the North highlights the personalized nature of the educational experience. Nearly sixty percent of classes have fewer than 20 students, and the student to faculty ratio is a low 12 to 1. In recent years, Roger Williams University has created new degrees, hired 100 new faculty members and increased the depth and breadth of its academic and co-curricular programs, increasing study abroad opportunities from five to 50. The University also recently completed construction on a number of major new buildings on campus, including Global Heritage Hall, a new state-of-the- art academic center and an expansion to its marine science facility.
"These rankings provide further evidence of the outstanding reputation Roger Williams University has in the world of higher education," stated President Nirschel. "Going forward, we will extend these accomplishments, building on our already strong undergraduate program and expanding our academic offerings to help prepare the next generation of globally responsible leaders."
